Youth Development Programme

14 December 08

The last few weeks have seen the weather play havoc across the Junior and Youth section.  With almost all clubs having to postpone or cancel fixtures due to the state of the fields, no team could feel more aggrieved than our U17 team.

After performing strongly in their first two outings, the team haven’t played since at home to Ripon on October 12th – almost 2 months ago!!  Despite this, the team have continued to train regularly and spirits are high with Oliver “Stripey” Ritchie leading the way with his effervescent humour.

The Scarborough 6th Form and Scarborough College teams played recently in a very entertaining encounter won 24-17 by the 6th Form.  With both teams heavily represented by SRUFC players, it was a great opportunity for team mates to test their skills against each other.

The Mathew Sheppard Memorial Trophy has been confirmed for Thursday 26th February 2009.  The annual event will see Year 8 teams from throughout the region compete in this highly contested Festival.

Our Youth Development Programme has been in full swing recently with the focus on delivering quality sessions within the local schools.  We are currently providing Graham School with a comprehensive Rugby programme which should see all students playing rugby before February 2009.  This is being run in conjunction with our programmes in place throughout Filey School, Raincliffe School, St Peters Primary and 6th Form/YCC.

27 November 08

Due to the poor weather we have experienced recently, todays Year 8 Mathew Sheppard Memorial Trophy has been postponed. This will be rescheduled to early in the new year - date TBC.

26 November 08

Today the Scarborough 6th Form team made the short trip to Scarborough College to play against their First XV.  In a typically tight encounter, both teams were willing to move the ball when given the opportunity.  It was not long however before the College team converted their sustained pressure on the visitors into points through a well worked try by the Forward pack.  The 6th Form team however looked to strike back immediately through their own Forwards as well as the boot of Fly Half Gordan Bland which kept the hosts at bay.  A try to Jack Rivers followed by a converted try to in form Centre Mathew Cooper put the visiting team in front at half time.

The second half started with Scarborough College making all the play.   The Halves pairing of Jake Rollinson and Tyler Hodgson making full use of the quality ball their forwards provided and giving the visitors plenty of tackling practice.  This pressure eventually resulted in several penalties, one of which was converted into points by Hodgson.  The momentum of the match continued to swing until defensive pressure by the visitors resulted in a turnover which was used to good effect.  Several phases of play by the 6th Form forwards was finished off by Mathew Cooper whose try to the left of the posts was converted by Bland.

The 6th Form Man of the Match was Mathew Cooper while Chris Bowker from the College team deserves special mention for his damaging runs and huge workload.

24 November 08

The Scarborough 6th Form and Yorkshire Coast College team travelled to Bishop Burton on wednesday to fulfill an away League fixture.  In an action packed 80 minutes, the lead changed several times before the game ended in a 15-12 loss.  Both teams attacked as much as possible while making full use of the strong winds.  Unfortunately, the Scarborough team was hampered throughout the match with injuries to several players forcing them from the pitch.  Scarboroughs Man of the Match went to fullback Robert Squires who carved off huge metres with his devastating counter attacking.

19 November 08

Our Junior and Youth section have been in full swing recently with Yorkshire Cup fixtures played alongside our regular League games.  The amount of work done by our players, coaching and management staff during the period has been immense, with parents and supporters all chipping in to help out.  One reward of this hard work has been the huge number of players recently selected to attend East Yorkshire Player Development Days.

Of particular note however is our current Under 13 team coached by Craig Fairbairn and EJ Jooste.  The team have bonded well together in their first season of Junior rugby and have accomplished some amazing results.  Recent wins over Bridlington, Whitby and most notably, Hull Ionians have set the team up for a fantastic season.  The lads have built a reputation with their hard running, ferocious tackling and endless support play.  Dan Brookman, Nick Wilson, Lewis Macmillan, Will Mikhelson and Mathew Warnes are starting to gather a legion of followers with their entertaining style of rugby.  Congratulations must also go out to Craig and EJ who have struck a chord with their open coaching style and their commitment to the development of Core Skills.

Our club commitment to the community through the Scarborough 6th Form team has also met with some recent success.   The team travelled down to Rotherham to play Thomas Rotherham College for our first away League fixture.  In spite of the travel and weather conditions, the team played exceptionally well to secure a 40-15 win.  The teams' next League fixture will be an away match against Bishop Burton School.  With the bulk of players also representing the club at U17 and Senior level, the future looks bright for Scarborough Rugby.

The Mathew Sheppard Memorial Trophy for Year 8 students has been scheduled to play on Thursday 27th November.  Filey School will be looking to defend the title they won last year against schools from throughout the region.  Due to the light, the event will start at 3pm at our Newby facilities with a likely finish of approximately 5.30.  All parents and supporters are welcome to attend.

31 October 08

Tonights Emerging Players Development Program session will be held at Silveroyd.  All players are required to be there and ready for a 6pm start.

28 October 08

Since my last posting I have met with our website developer and plans are underway to give the YDO page a massive facelift. Keep an eye out for these changes in the not too distant future.

In the meantime, we have had action aplenty from the Mini/Junior and Youth sections.

Of particular note was the huge turnout of kids to the Bus Pull around Marine Parade.   The effort and commitment displayed by the club was great to see, none more pleasing than that shown by the U13-U18 teams.  With the fun part over, it's now down to all players to start returning their sponsors money into their managers so we can see what our final total is.

Malton recently hosted the Scarborough and Ryedale Schools 7 a-side tournament which featured teams from St Augustines, Filey, Graham and Scalby.  It was great to see the number of SRUFC players who featured prominently in these teams and who went on to dominate the Festival.  One player who caught the attention of spectators was Harrison Pelucci with his elusive running and committed defending.  Harrison is a regular starter for his Scarborough U14 team and his improvement as a player is really starting to show.

A large number of our Junior and Youth Section have been undergoing training and trial games for East Yorkshire.  With most of the squads due to be announced at the end of this month, we already have several players who are very likely to secure Representative honours.  Once these teams are confirmed, I'll post the names of the successful candidates.

Our own Emerging Players Development Program has begun with three sessions already completed.  The EPD Program is designed to identify talented players from within the Club and help accelerate their development.  Players were nominated and assessed and I am pleased to announce that 23 were selected for the Program.  The Program itself consists of four components - Core Skills, Position Specifics, Unit Skills and SAQ (Speed,Agility,Quickness) - which will assist in their onfield development.  An itinerary of the upcoming sessions can be found in the clubhouse.

This sunday we are hosting teams from Whitby and Guisborough as they take on our U13, U15 and U16 teams.  Parents and spectators are welcome to come down and show their support for the club at any time.  Games will usually Kick Off from 11 am onwards, or you can come and see the next batch of players (U12 and below) training with Nigel Wilson and his team from 10 am.

1 October 08

Congratulations to Chris Bowker, Adam McCluskie, Rob Squires, Max Thompson and Aaron Hedgecock for making the U17s East Yorkshire Squad.

Their selection for the squad is just reward for the commitment and ability shown during Club games and trainings.

More information on their results and upcoming Fixtures will be made available through the Scarborough Evening News.

1 October 08

Please note that the Scarborough 6th Form College Fixture against Thomas Rotherham College on 8th October has been rescheduled.  The game will now be played on 5 November.

1 October 08

It was a bit remiss of me not to mention a recent Festival held at the Club last week.

Year 5 & 6 students from St Georges, Filey Junior, Barrowcliffe, Gladstone Road and Newby and Scalby Primaries all participated in a Mixed TAG Rugby Festival.

The afternoon was an absolute success with plenty of running rugby enjoyed by players and spectators alike.

TAG Rugby is a non contact version of Rugby which provides a platform for girls and boys to compete against each other.  If you would like more information on TAG Rugby, please feel free to contact me or look up the RFU website for details.  www.rfu.com

U18 Fixture rescheduled / Graham School Fixture

Please note that tomorrow nights (1 October) U18 Floodlight Fixture against Bridlington has been postponed.  Unfortunately, a number of injuries and sickness coupled with East Yorkshire Representative commitments have forced us to delay the fixture.  As soon as a suitable date has been confirmed I will put this on the website.

I would like to send out a huge thank you to Craig Fairbairn for Refereeing the Year 10 Graham School vs Scarborough College fixture today.  At very short notice, Craig - who shares the Head Coaching role of our U13 team - agreed to control what turned out to be a very tight and competitve game.  For the record, Scarborough College won the match 5-0.

30 September 08

This Thursday 2nd October will see the first of our Secondary School Festivals of the School year.

The Year 7 event will start at 4pm with an approximate finishing time of 5.30.  Scarborough College, Graham, Filey and St Augustines have already confirmed that they will be sending teams to the Festival.

Supporters are welcome to come down to the SRUFC clubrooms to watch what should be an entertaining afternoon of rugby.

24 September 08

Congratulations to the combined Scarborough 6th Form/Yorkshire Coast College team who beat Wyke College 11-10 today.

A highly contested and enthralling match was forecast and it certainly lived up to the expectations.

The result was largely based on the forward pack who set the tone early in the match with several damaging runs around the ruck.  After sustained pressure on the visitors, Jack Rivers crossed over for the opening try.

Not long after however, a tighthead scrum gave Wyke an opportunity to score from which they duly took and converted.  An armwrestle of a match ensued with both packs looking to exert their dominance around the rucks.  Some interesting play by the visitors around the ruck and offside lines ensured the game was always going to be tight, however, two successful penalties by the home side gave them a lead which they never surrendered.

Scarborough's Man of the Match award went to Flanker Nial Fleming for his outstanding work and commitment both on and off the ball.

23 September 08

6th Form Game / TAG Rugby Festival

Tomorrow will see an action packed afternoon at the Rugby Club and Silveroyd.

At 2pm the Scarborough 6th Form/Yorkshire Coast College team will play their first competitive game of the season at Silveroyd.  Wyke College will be travelling up to Scarborough and will be keen to avenge their loss to the team at the end of last season.  Following a successful preseason, the 6th Form team will hope to start the season on a high with a dominant performance.

At 4pm the first of this seasons TAG Rugby Festivals will be held at the Newby Showground.  This Festival will see Primary schools from throughout the area compete in a Year 5 and 6 Mixed TAG Rugby tournament.  The scheduled finish time of this event is approximately 5.30pm.

Any and all supporters are welcome to attend the events, which should provide an entertaining afternoon of rugby.

Having completed their Entry Level Referees Award almost a year ago, 6 of our 13 new Referees will be testing their understanding of the new ELVs during tonights trial game (Vikings Vs Danesmen).  This game will provide another step in their development as Referees and reinforce their work done last season.

As part of this development, all of our Referees will continue to control home games for our Junior and Youth teams this season.

Junior and Youth Coaches

With our first games insight, I would like to extend a warm welcome to this seasons coaches.

  • The U14 team will now be coached by Darrell Conlin with assistance from his son Alex.  Darrell has gathered a huge amount of experience and knowledge from his previous roles within the U13-U17 age grades.  Alex – having acquired his RFU Level 1 certification – is looking at continuing his development by assisting with the team.

  • Our U13 squad have two new coaches onboard with Craig Fairbairn and “EJ” Jooste.  Both are Level 1 accredited and are currently playing for our Senior teams.  Their enthusiasm and understanding of the game should ensure a successful season for the team.

  • After previously coaching the U13 team, Sean Outhart is looking at continuing his development by assisting with the U16s.  Under the guidance of Mike Tildsley, Sean and the team will look to build on the achievements of last season.

  • Following another successful campaign, Guy Woodward will be in charge of our U15s squad.  The team are also well supported with parents regularly assisting in the coaching and management of the team.

  • And finally, after recently playing overseas, Jaxon Tite has returned to become an integral part of the U17s coaching setup.  Alongside Dave Snodin and I, he is looking at continuing his coaching development in what should be an exciting year for all involved.

As part of our successful Coach Development program, we are continually striving to improve our coaches’ knowledge of the game.  By regularly attending RFU accredited courses and in-house seminars we aim to further their understanding and enjoyment of the game.  If you would like to know more about the courses available or our Junior and Youth teams, please feel free to contact myself or Sam Conlin.
